The Hobbit is a classic children's book full of wonder, magic, and adventure. In this five-week class, learners will participate in meaningful discussions as we read J. R. Tolkien's introductory novel to the world of Middle Earth. Book clubs are an excellent way to engage reluctant readers or help enthusiastic readers dig a little deeper. Students will need their own copy of the text to complete assigned readings before attending class. Whether your student has never heard of Lord of the Rings or is an enthusiastic fan on their third re-read, this class will be full of fun for all. We will explore the text and it's themes through discussion and a variety of engaging critical thinking activities. Class will be conducted in a casual, book club style with plenty of time for discussion. I will also read aloud important or exciting parts during class to enrich our discussion. The reading schedule will be as follows: Lesson 1: chapters 1-4 Discussion and activities will focus on author and setting. What do we learn about Middle Earth in the beginning chapters? Lesson 2: chapters 5-7 Focus on character contrast and development. How has Bilbo changed since he went on this adventure? Lesson 3: chapters 8-11 Focus on how expectations of various characters impact the text. What did the dwarves expect of Bilbo? What did the men of Dale expect of the dwarves? Lesson 4: chapters 12-14 Focus on plot and predictions. After discussing this section, we will predict what we think will happen next. Lesson 5: chapters 15-19 (finish book) Focus on themes developed through the story: adventure, friendship and bravery.

I create safe, inviting spaces for kids to build relationships with other students, practicing the skills of empathy in the context of a caring community.
My husband and I have two daughters and two dogs. I love to read, bake, and knit (but not all at the same time!). I can't wait to see you in class!
