The Fellowship of the Ring is the first installment in what is widely considered the greatest fantasy epic ever written. In this five-week class, learners will participate in meaningful discussions as we read J. R. Tolkien's adventure. Book clubs are an excellent way to engage reluctant readers or help enthusiastic readers dig a little deeper. Students will need their own copy of the text to complete assigned readings before attending class. Whether your student has never heard of Lord of the Rings or is an enthusiastic fan on their third re-read, this class will be full of fun for all. We will explore the text and it's themes through discussion and a variety of engaging critical thinking activities. Class will be conducted in a casual, book club style with plenty of time for discussion. I will also read aloud important or exciting parts during class to enrich our discussion. The Lord of the Rings is a more challenging text, so learners should be confident and experienced readers. There are no prerequisites for this class, but reading The Hobbit first is a good idea to understand the setting and background for the main trilogy.
Learning Goals
Students will sharpen their literacy skills and foster their love of reading! We will discuss and deepen student understanding of literary elements such as plot, character development, and theme.
