Parental Guidance
Dear Parents,
Please be aware that the subject of skin color, hair texture, discrimination, and racism are vocabulary words taught in the class. I am going to be talking about topics that can stir up emotions, memories, and feelings. I would love for you to talk to your child about their own race, ethnicity, and experiences. I will be identifying situations and providing vocabularies to express these concepts. So whether your learner is a reader or not, your learner can participate. There are audiobooks or YouTube.com for their listening pleasure.
Sincerely,
Teacher Elaine

Illinois Teaching Certificate
When I was born my birth certificate read, “Negro”. This is when my story began. In less than a decade, my race went from “Negro” and “Colored” to “Black”. I arrived in America at a local hospital during one of the most tumultuous times in the USA. I have taught a variety of Black History and cultural-related classes on Outschool.
I am an experienced educator who brings cultural diversity into the classroom for enrichment and to broaden our understanding. My formative years were spent in the library reading books or at home in the quietness of my bedroom. Reading is a gateway to knowledge. I believe that book clubs are a great way to foster learning and critical thinking.
Finishing a book provides a sense of accomplishment. I enjoy sharing my enthusiasm for reading or listening to living books.
