Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 4
During this multi-day class, we will read the book "I Survived the Shark Attacks of 1916," written by Lauren Tarshis. We will begin each class by reviewing the previous chapters read, and we will read at least one chapter per meeting together. We will pause throughout the reading to discuss the characters, events, and plot of the story.
I believe children learn best by being an active participant. Therefore, I encourage students to provide their thoughts during discussions, and to build upon others ideas during the book club. Children learn best from one another, so I try to moderate the class, but let students lead any discussions. The mute function may be used during read alouds if background noise becomes problematic. Read alouds will primarily be from the author, but will include close readings from me as well as students.
In addition to reading the book, we will learn about specific shark species and create a lapbook that can be kept after the class is finished. Outside reading will be required from students, therefore a copy of the book will be necessary to complete the class.

***I will not be able to share any recordings of our meetings due to copyright laws from the author.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their reading comprehension skills.
Students will learn about different shark species and create a lapbook to display the information on.

Hi!
My name is Mrs. Leslie. I have been an Educator for 16 years. I spent my first thirteen years as a first grade teacher, and my last three years have been as a third grade English Language Arts Teacher. I am especially passionate about teaching struggling readers, and those readers and writers that just need a little boost of confidence to be successful. I received my education from Austin Peay State University where I earned my Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education. After teaching in the classroom for a few years, I decided that I wanted to return to school to pursue a Master's Degree. I received my Master's of Science Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Western Governors University.
I serve as a Mentor Teacher at my school to assist other teachers in their classroom. In addition to this, I have led several Professional Development courses for other teachers.
My belief is that ALL students can learn and grow! If students are given explicit, intensive, high quality instruction in their area of deficit, have a good at home support system, and have an "I can" attitude, they will learn and be successful.
My hobbies include reading, traveling, spending time with my family, and two fur babies, and catching up on sleep! I look forward to teaching your child!
