US Grade 5 - 8
Are you someone who reads graphic novels, books, comics, audiobooks or non fiction? Join us every week for a chat about what you discovered. Share and inspire others to read something new! This class provides a great motivation to read and a wonderful opportunity to present what you love. Learner-led book presentations will direct each class. If nobody has read a book they want to review (and you might even have a bad review you wish to present), I will direct conversation around books that we might want to read in the future. If we are really out of conversation around books, we might play a round of Gartic Phone just for fun. ✧˖°.📖 Class Structure: Welcome greeting and introductions. We will take turns presenting our book for the week, giving our opinions and presenting why we feel this is a good or bad book. If you are only halfway through, we still want to hear how it's going! Books will be chosen by learners and reading will take place outside of class. Discussion will be guided along lines of mutual respect as there will be different perspectives and preferences in our group. We will be coming into this group with a wide variety of interests and this might lead us to try a book we've never considered before. We are open to all sorts of books be it non-fiction, graphic novels or perhaps even an article you've come across. 📖Reading comprehension and presentation are a big part of this class. 📖The ability to summarize and present ideas from another work is an invaluable skill. ⚠️Please ensure books are suited to teen readers. If you aren't sure, look your book up on Amazon and see what the age rating is for your choice. ✧˖°.🎧📖 We are open to all learners and reading levels. If you use audio-books, we love that too! ESL C1 and up. *This course directly relates to B.C. Curricular Competencies for ELA Grades 4-12 under Comprehend and connect (reading, listening, viewing) Create and communicate (writing, speaking, representing).

Yvonne (the avid reader instructor) says: "I've always enjoyed sharing my love of crafting, reading, outdoor experiences and supportive social environments. I'm a Metis interdisciplinary artist, musician and micro-farmer. Sustainability is important to me as it encourages connection with nature no matter where you live. My experiences range from 10 years with IBM as a field tech to professional musician with a B.Mus from McGill University. I am a songwriter and a homeschooling mum of two kids and my current obsession is board game design. I believe that child-led project based learning is the key to engagement. As a parent of an ND child, I believe connection and relationship are the first step in education."
