As a former school librarian, I have a passion for reading, reading with others, and connecting people with books they love. The goal of this class is to encourage a love of reading and to connect reading and writing together. I want each student to know they too can be an author and love reading. Each week students will be reading and/or listening to a new story or part of a story. After the story the students will be encouraged to participate in a teacher- guided group discussion. The discussion may include favorite parts, details, plot, character analysis, problem/solution, comparison/contrast, personal connections, and more. After the discussion, each student will be given a short writing activity that could include an opinion, a personal connection, reading comprehension, alternative endings, or techniques the author uses, and more. If time allows writing can be shared in class, or can be posted on the classroom page for friends to read and enjoy. This is not meant to be a learn to read or write class. Students should be able to write at least 2 or 3 sentences independently (spelling errors are fine). Books are as follows: Week of April 19 "Enemy Pie" Week of April 26 "Red, A Crayon's Story" Week of May 3 "I Wanna Go Home" Week of May 10 "Giraffe Problems" Week of May 17 "Stephanie's Ponytail" Week of May 24 "Stuck" Book list will be updated at class continues
Learning Goals
The ultimate goal of this class is to encourage a love of reading and writing. I want students to be able to connect books they love to read to their writing and know they are authors too.
