"Book Club Number the Stars"
Class experience
The book Number the Stars has been on the list of best books for upper elementary/middle schoolers for a long time. It is a fascinating read, and will spur in-depth discussions about the characters and about the resistance during World War II. Week one: We will preview the book, and discuss the background/history before reading the book. We will touch on vocabulary, and how to use the skills of context clues and inference. Background information on the resistance movement in Denmark will be...
Students will gain insight into the characters of Number the Stars, as well as gain insight about the events of that time period.
I have taught this book many times in classrooms in Lutheran Schools. The students gain a great deal of respect for the people that lived through this time. We will do our best to be objective in our discussions, but allow for the students to express their own feelings via their written words and discussion.
A personal copy of Number the Stars by Lois Lowry is required. Students will learn to annotate, so they will write in the book as well as keeping reading logs and creating sketches
