US Grade 3 - 6
The Hidden Staircase is a classic children's book full of mystery, cleverness, and adventure. In this four-week class, learners will participate in meaningful discussions and engaging activities as we read Carolyn Keene's second novel in her iconic series Nancy Drew. Book clubs are an excellent way to engage reluctant readers or help enthusiastic readers dig a little deeper. Students will need their own copy of the text to complete assigned readings before attending class. Whether your student has never heard of Nancy or is an enthusiastic fan, this class will be full of fun for all. We will explore the text and it's themes through discussion and a variety of engaging critical thinking activities. Class will be conducted in a casual, book club style with plenty of time for discussion. The reading schedule will be as follows: Lesson 1: chapters 1-5 Discussion and activities will focus on character development: How has Nancy's character developed from the first book? Lesson 2: chapters 6-11 Focus on foreshadowing and prediction: What hints does Keene give about what will happen next? What do you think is the answer to the mystery? Lesson 3: chapters 12-16 Focus on plot: We will work together to fill out a plot map of what we have read so far. What are the most important events? Lesson 4: chapters 17-20 (finish book) Focus on themes developed through the story: Following your intuition, good triumphing over evil.
