Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
Beginner - Advanced Level
Join us as we participate in an epic adventure through Middle Earth! The Fellowship of the Ring is the first book in J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic adventure series, The Lord of the Rings.

One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.

In ancient times the Rings of Power were crafted by the Elven-smiths, and Sauron, the Dark Lord, forged the One Ring, filling it with his own power so that he could rule all others. But the One Ring was taken from him, and though he sought it throughout Middle-earth, it remained lost to him. After many ages it fell into the hands of Bilbo Baggins, as told in The Hobbit. In a sleepy village in the Shire, young Frodo Baggins finds himself faced with an immense task, as his elderly cousin Bilbo entrusts the Ring to his care. Frodo must leave his home and make a perilous journey across Middle-earth to the Cracks of Doom, there to destroy the Ring, save Middle Earth, and foil the Dark Lord in his evil purpose.

In this multi-day class, we will meet once weekly for six weeks to dive deep into this first book in the series. During class time, full participation in class discussion is expected. There is grace for a shy student, of course, but students will be encouraged to dive into the discussion as they acclimate to the group. Each student will have a turn to share their thoughts and ideas. I will have questions and discussion prompts ready each week, should conversation lag. After our discussion time, we will end with a game if time permits! My book clubs are typically highly engaging, highly interactive, very lively!

Chapters will be assigned to be read ahead of time, before class. There are 22 chapters in this book. The book is also available as an audiobook! All of class time will be dedicated to discussing the books, applying critical thinking, discussing characters, plot, and other literary aspects, etc, and ending with a fun game, all related to the book. Our last class will be a book party! Snacks are welcome and encouraged!

Parental Guidance
The Lord of the Rings is an adventure series with epic battles, yes, but inner turmoil too. Overwhelming forces of good and evil, but also temptation and greed within oneself; potent sorcery, but perhaps more so the magical spells of friendship and loyalty and devotion. This is the kind of story the word epic seems to have been invented for, but it's also an intimate tale about the bonds among companions and about the human instinct to do the right thing. From these simple features it derives its true power. This book is best suited to students in their teen or tween years. Ms. Carol always advises parents to pre-screen their student’s reading selections, even if you just listen to the audiobook!
