Class Experience

This is a "practical book club" in that the book is not a work of fiction where students read and meet to discuss plot, characters, and themes, but rather students read a book that has practical skills that can be applied to their lives--be it socially, academically, personally, or professionally--now and in the future.

For this club, students will read "How to Win Friends & Influence People in the Digital Age" by Dale Carnegie & Associates--an updated version of Carnegie's 1936 book "How to Win Friends & Influence People" that maintains the same principles but applies them to a 21st century world.

The book will be divided into 4 approximately equal parts to be read for each class (the sections will be listed and available within the classroom postings for students as they join). Ideally, students will have read the section before the scheduled class so they may discuss the principles and examples. Furthermore, students are encouraged to share any connections they made to their own personal observations, experience, and/or other similar books & ideas.

Reading Sections:

Week 1: Part I - Essentials of Engagement
Week 2: Part II - Six Ways to Make a Lasting Impression
Week 3: Part III - How to Merit and Maintain Others' Trust
Week 4: Part IV - How to Lead Change Without Resistance or Resentment
