Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen is an award-winning, young adult novel that is one of my favorites. We will read, write, draw, and discuss this amazing book. The traits and topics of bravery, determination, survival, and sometimes even despair are intricately woven together in this never-to-be-forgotten tale. You will even learn survival skills of your own that may come in handy someday! We meet together and discuss the chapters that have been assigned for the class. I will also teach reading skills such as annotating and reading logs, drawing to visualize scenes, and how to have a great discussion. We will utilize a Google Classroom, Kahoot, escape rooms, along with our Zoom meetings. I am very enthusiastic when I teach - and you will be too, as you discover amazing ideas and share them with your classmates. Week 1: PLEASE DO NOT READ THE BOOK BEFORE WEEK 1!! We will discuss survival and what would be included in a survival kit. We will also complete an anticipation guide and gain background knowledge prior to reading. Homework will be to read the first 6 chapters, annotate, and begin a reading log before week 2. Week 2: We will discuss our reading logs, observations, and have an in-depth discussion about the first 6 chapters. Homework - chapters 7-12 Week 3: Discuss reading logs, observations, and have an in-depth discussion about chapters 7-12.
