In this multi-day class, we will read, write, and discuss the book: Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen
Class Experience
US Grade 4 - 7
Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen is an award-winning, young adult novel that is one of my favorites. We will read, write, draw, and discuss this amazing book. The traits and topics of bravery, determination, survival, and sometimes even despair are intricately woven together in this never-to-be-forgotten tale. You will even learn survival skills of your own that may come in handy someday! We meet together and discuss the chapters that have been assigned for the class. I will also teach reading...
Students will acquire the reading skills of annotating, reading logs, learning vocabulary, and writing about what they read. discussions during classtime will enrich their knowledge and understanding of this outstanding novel.
I have taught this book in classrooms for many years.
Approximately 6 chapters per week will be read for homework. Learners will also annotate and keep a reading log as they read the chapters. Other homework such as writing short answers to questions and drawing scenes will also be a part of the homework. I am guessing approximately 2-3 hours per week will be necessary
A personal copy of the book Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen. Students are asked to write in their book (yes, this is annotating!) A way to keep a reading log - notebook or computer Art supplies
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
- google classroom
- kahoot
45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 2 - 4 hours per week outside of class.
This book is about surviving in the wilderness. It also discusses a secret that the boy is keeping - that his parents are divorcing.
