Join us for this fun, highly energetic, and interactive book club. During this seven week class, we will meet once a week to “travel” to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry! You do NOT want to miss our book club discussion of this beloved bestseller! For twelve long years, the dread fortress of Azkaban held an infamous prisoner named Sirius Black. Convicted of killing thirteen people with a single curse, he was said to be the heir apparent to the Dark Lord, Voldemort. Now he has escaped, leaving only two clues as to where he might be headed: Harry Potter's defeat of You-Know-Who was Black's downfall as well. And the Azkban guards heard Black muttering in his sleep, "He's at Hogwarts...he's at Hogwarts." Harry Potter isn't safe, not even within the walls of his magical school, surrounded by his friends. Because on top of it all, there may well be a traitor in their midst. In this multi-day class, we will meet once weekly for seven weeks to dive deep into the third book in the series… Harry Potter And The Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling. During class time, full participation in class discussion is expected. There is grace for a shy student, of course, but students will be encouraged to dive into the discussion as they acclimate to the group. Each student will have a turn to share their thoughts and ideas. I will have questions and discussion prompts ready each week, should conversation lag. After our discussion time, we will end with a game if time permits! My book clubs are typically highly engaging, highly interactive, very lively! Chapters will be assigned to be read ahead of time, before class. There are 22 chapters in this book. The book is also available as an audiobook! All of class time will be dedicated to discussing the books, applying critical thinking, discussing characters, plot, and other literary aspects, designing a book cover, creating a house flag, etc, and ending with a fun game, all related to the book. Our last class will be a book party! Snacks are welcome and encouraged! I am creating book clubs for each book in the series! Stay tuned! Week 1- Please read chapters 1-3 BEFORE class! Week 2- Please read chapters 4-6 BEFORE class! Week 3 - Please read chapters 7-9 BEFORE class! Week 4- Please read chapters 10-12 BEFORE class! Week 5 - Please read chapters 13-15 BEFORE class! Week 6 - Please read chapters 16-18 BEFORE class! Week 7 - Please read chapters 19-22 BEFORE class!

Parental Guidance
This series is a well known, well loved children's book series about a make believe magic world. The books in this series start out lighthearted and the adventures are rather tame ones, but they do grow darker as the series progresses. The good guys vs bad guys struggle is a very real aspect of the series, and the bad guys are very bad indeed. It is not my style to glorify the scary or darker aspects of any story. I prefer to focus on, and to keep our class discussions focused on the positive life lessons. We do, however, briefly touch on the darker topics, such as deaths of characters, and the struggle to overcome evil, as well.
The stories absolutely do contain a host of positive life lessons. True friendship, the courage, a strong desire to help others, and the age old struggle for good to triumph over evil… these are real life lessons applicable to our everyday non-magical world! I HIGHLY recommend parents read the series book beforehand or alongside of their child. Only you know if this series is appropriate for your child!
Supply List
Students will need a copy of the book Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling. The book must be read or listened to BEFORE class. Students can use their own books, library books, ebooks, or even listen to the audio books. If listening to the audiobooks, it is highly recommended that student reads independently to develop their own reading comprehension and competency.

Ms. Carol has been a voracious reader since childhood. Her lifelong passion is to cultivate curiosity in children, and to inspire a lifelong love of learning, especially the reading and enjoyment of beautiful literature!
It is not my style to glorify the scary or darker aspects of any story. I prefer to focus on, and to keep our class discussions focused on the positive life lessons. We do, however, briefly and tactfully touch on the darker topics, such as deaths of characters, and the struggle to overcome evil, as well. I make every attempt to model and teach critical thinking, regardless of what book we are reading.
Ms. Carol has a PhD in pedagogy and history, with a Master’s in Cultural Studies. One of my core values is to teach children to think critically, and to apply that to everything they read. Racism or racial stereotypes is never acceptable to me, even in a fictional, magical world.
