Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
Come fall in love with this classic story as we read and discuss the delightful , enchanting adventures of Mary Lennox and the forgotten secret garden she brings back to life in this 6 week book club.

When orphaned Mary Lennox comes to live at her uncle's great house on the Yorkshire Moors, she finds it full of secrets. The mansion has nearly one hundred rooms, and her uncle keeps himself locked up. And at night, she hears the sound of crying down one of the long corridors.

The gardens surrounding the large property are Mary's only escape. Then, Mary discovers a secret garden, surrounded by walls and locked with a missing key. With the help of two unexpected companions, Mary discovers a way in—and becomes determined to bring the garden back to life.

The Secret Garden, by j Francis Hodgson Burnett, is one of the best-selling books ever written and continues to touch the hearts of readers of all ages. I can’t wait to share with your students this delightful classic!

In this multi-day class, we will meet once weekly for 6 weeks to dive deep. During class time, full participation in class discussion is expected. There is grace for a shy student, of course, but students will be encouraged to dive into the discussion as they acclimate to the group. Each student will have a turn to share their thoughts and ideas. I will have questions and discussion prompts ready each week, should conversation lag. After our discussion time, we will end with a game if time permits! My book clubs are typically highly engaging, highly interactive, very lively!

Chapters will be assigned to be read ahead of time, before class. There are 27 chapters in this book. The book is also available as an audiobook! All of class time will be dedicated to discussing the books, applying critical thinking, discussing characters, plot, and other literary aspects, designing a book cover, and ending with a fun game, all related to the book. Snacks are always welcome!

Parental Guidance
Ms. Carol has been a voracious reader since childhood. Her lifelong passion is to cultivate curiosity in children, and to inspire a lifelong love of learning, especially the reading and enjoyment of beautiful literature! It is not my style to glorify the scary or darker aspects of any story. I prefer to focus on, and to keep our class discussions focused on the positive life lessons. We do, however, briefly and tactfully touch on the darker topics, such as deaths of characters, servants, bullying, and unkindness in this story. I make every attempt to model and teach critical thinking, regardless of what book we are reading. There are also the following areas of concern that will be addressed in class: the child Mary expresses opinions laced with racism, biased, and stereotypical assumptions about her caregiver back in India. Racism is never tolerated in my class, even the an imaginary world of books. We will discuss and apply critical thinking skills to these and all aspects of this book. Ms. Carol has a PhD in pedagogy and history, with a Master’s in Cultural Studies. One of my core values is to teach children to think critically, and to apply that to everything they read.
Supply List
Students will need a copy of the book The Secret Garden by Francis Hodgson Burnett. The assigned chapters must be read or listened to BEFORE class. Students can use their own books, library books, ebooks, or even listen to the audio books. If listening to the audiobooks, it is highly recommended that student reads independently to develop their own reading comprehension and competency.
