If your student enjoys reading, either just for fun or as their special interest, then they'll love this book club class! This weekly class meeting will be a loosely structured, stress- and judgment-free place for students with special needs to talk about their love for reading, get book recommendations from fellow students and the teacher, and meet new friends with similar interests. Activities will vary depending on the interests of each group, including word-play games, classic games like Bingo themed around different books, or read-alongs with the teacher. Some classes will have a general theme, but students are welcome to chat about whatever book/s they'd like. During each meeting, students will have the opportunity to share a bit about a book of their choice, whether it's what they're currently reading or just their favorite book. All genres and reading levels are welcome, including graphic novels, manga, nonfiction and everything in between. Students will have the opportunity to practice social skills including active listening, presenting information to a small group, and/or reading aloud. All books discussed in class should be appropriate, and the teacher can provide individual book recommendations depending on each student's reading level and interests. This is a small class size limited to 6 students. Week of 9/8: Fantasy theme; students are welcome to discuss their favorite fantasy books, with activities themed around Wings of Fire, Lord of the Rings, and/or other class choices. Week of 9/15: Animal theme; students welcome to discuss based on or featuring animals, of any genre. Activities will be themed around animal facts, Warrior Cats, and other class choices. Week of 9/22: Manga/Graphic Novel theme, with activities based around Studio Ghibli, Dragon Prince, and other class-appropriate student choices. Week of 9/29: No theme; all genres welcome, and classes can choose their activities from any theme.
