Welcome to your learner's first book club! This small group class is designed specifically for those students who want or need an encouraging environment to gain confidence in reading aloud and practice fluency and comprehension using popular books they might get from the library, very inexpensively online, or even may have at home. We will meet twice a week in this small group guided reading class. Our first class of the week will begin with pre-reading activities such as activating prior knowledge and making predictions. We will then read our book round-robin style, pausing for me to gently guide fluency when appropriate. I will also read with the children to model fluency including pace, expression, and attention to punctuation. After we read, we will check our predictions and begin our book discussions. This will set us up for our second class meeting of the week, where we will extend our discussion and focus on targeted elements of comprehension through games, worksheets, and other extension activities. So the first meeting of the week is mainly targeting fluency, whereas the second meeting of the week is primarily targeting comprehension, although both will be scattered throughout every class meeting. We will be reading Level 1 books in this class, with the understanding that not all books labeled "Level 1" follow the same guidelines (unless they come from the same publishing company). This means that some books will be a little easier (great for fluency practice) and some books will be a little harder (perfect for employing those comprehension strategies). In general, this class is perfect for those students who have a strong foundation in phonics, CVC, CVCe, and beginning sight words. (If you need classes to build a foundation before beginning this class, please see my profile for all my beginning reading classes. Similarly, if you are looking for more challenging fluency or comprehension classes, you can find those on my teacher profile page as well. In my written profile, I have recommended to you the order that I suggest taking my reading classes, but please feel free to reach out to me if you have questions about where your child should begin.) Please note that students must have the book for class. For the purpose of pointing out words, grammar, punctuation, and pictures, I will share my copy on the screen, but I encourage all students to read from their individual books. All of these books should be available online for your e-reader apps such as Kindle or iBooks. In many cases, the Kindle edition of the book is free with a Prime account. Otherwise, all of these books can be found for less than $5 on Amazon, and in many cases for just $1-2 if you opt for a used copy (Be sure to order ahead of time so your books arrive in time for class.) Lastly, many of these books can be found at your local library! I have provided links to the books below for your convenience. These links are not mine, and I do not get paid if you order through these links.
