Book Club: Fever 1793
Class experience
In this book club, we will read and discuss the Laurie Halse Anderson historical fiction novel, Fever 1793. Readers will be able to make many text-to-self connections between the Yellow Fever epidemic in the US and the COVID pandemic worldwide. We will learn quite a bit of US history as we read and discuss. We will discuss women's rights in 1793, slavery and servants, medicine in 1793, and the Free African Society. The book itself contains notes about all of the historical events that we...
I have studied United States History for many years, and have a great deal of expertise in dealing with these historical events.
Learners will need to have a hard copy of the book, Fever 1793, by Laurie Halse Anderson (paperback)
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
This book is obviously very close to what readers have experienced during the pandemic. They will make connections between their own experiences and the characters involved in the Yellow Fever Epidemic in 1793. Readers will be fascinated as they read about the medical research and treatment that occurred during that time in history. The novel is quite graphic when it describes the way patients were treated and the bodies disposed of, but they will also realize how different that time was from the current pandemic. Slavery and servanthood will be discussed, as well as the notable bravery of the Free African Society during this epidemic. I have taught this book in the classroom many times, and am always open to answering questions that the students may have.
We will be learning factual information about the topics in this book. We will be using the appendix in the back of the book only.
