Intermediate - Advanced Level
This class will be structured like a mini-book club, with a reading assignment of 4 chapters each week. In class, we will discuss plot, characters, vocabulary, and figurative language as well as give opinions and predictions. I was a Library Director for almost 18 years, and book clubs are my passion. I want to give my students the deep joy of reading that comes with open discussion with some help along the way if they need it. I have a lively and energetic teaching style and love to personalize lessons any way I can to enhance learning.
Learning Goals
Students will have active engagement with the book through lively discussion with the teacher.
Students will expand their knowledge of literature, story elements, and new vocabulary.

Parental Guidance
This novel contains themes of war, bullying, and discrimination of a veteran who may or may not struggle with undiagnosed mental illness and homelessness. There are firearms used in the story. In one chapter of the book, a girl is maimed because of a rock thrown by a bullying character. While these elements are all part of realistic and historical fiction story, they can be disturbing to some young readers.
