Learner goals include growth in vocabulary, vocabulary in context, understanding the realism and details used regarding diving in oceans and the inherent risks, , decision making, conflicts/resolutions, character development/motives/ quirks , the genre of realistic fiction, turning points, figurative language, and overall powerful themes including how situations can bring people together to see the greater good and the chance for survival, the implications of making correct healthy choices, reaching for your goals against all odds, grief , sorrow, greed, and the positive outcome that can occur when people set aside differences for a greater common good.. This book is a significant and important piece of literature that handles all of these topics in a way that will have you rooting for the main characters as they help each other, fight the impossible, and support each other.

Please read to end of chapter 23 (page 132) for the first meeting. Please complete reading the novel for the second meeting and learners will be asked to complete a study guide for the second half of the book in note form.0 hours per week outside of class
