This class explores the interesting story of a young crippled girl who is struggling with mistreatment by her mom and the looming start of World War 2. Ada must learn how to stand up to horrible cruelty at home while at the same time realizing that there is another world out there...different than she could have realized. Students will learn new vocabulary and how they are used in language. They will learn how to find the setting of a story and why that is important to making a story interesting. We will explore the use of language and how it can give us a visual picture of what we are reading. We will learn about character development over the story's plot. We will learn about the history and emotional elements of the story and compare that to our own experiences and lives today.
I have a Masters degree in English and teach reading and literacy in the public school system. Highly interesting reading is a great vehicle to learn excellent English skills in an enjoyable way.
1. Read the chapters or pages assigned before each class. 2. Complete "Chapter Summary" for each week. This will include: vocabulary words and questions about the reading. 3. Students are encouraged to come ready to share their thoughts about what they read (what they liked and did not).

45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
