It’s told from the point of view of Ha, a ten year old girl who leaves her home of Vietnam and struggles to find her place in America. We will use this incredible book as a vehicle for practicing a variety of skills including summarizing, inferencing, predicting, making connections, identifying themes, and analyzing the main character. We will also use context clues to understand unknown...
Inside Out and Back Again is a story of an immigrant, so we will discuss the difficulties immigrants may face as they adjust to new foods, languages, etc. Ha has to deal with mean students at school who have negative ideas about Vietnamese immigrants. They make ethnic jokes and call her names including "pancake face". We will talk about bullying. The backdrop of this story is the Vietnam War, but readers do not hear much about the war and the story is not violent outside of mean schoolchildren. We will keep our discussion age appropriate and learners will be promptly redirected if they bring up inappropriate content.
