Class Experience

Inside Out and Back Again is a heartfelt, thought-provoking, historical fiction novel written in verse. It’s told from the point of view of Ha, a ten year old girl who leaves her home of Vietnam and struggles to find her place in America.

We will use this incredible book as a vehicle for practicing a variety of skills including summarizing, inferencing, predicting, making connections, identifying themes, and analyzing the main character. We will also use context clues to understand unknown words and identify figurative language as we read. My goal is to help learners to become stronger readers by practicing comprehension skills in an authentic way, but ensuring that students have a fun and memorable reading experience is even more important to me!

This book camp will combine academic skill-building based on 4th grade reading standards with a fun and social environment. It will be primarily discussion-based, but I will also incorporate quick writes/sketches and interactive activities. Over the week I’ll gradually talk less and encourage students to take the reins during parts of class if they’re ready! I’m a strong believer in allowing learners to lead and will have built in flexibility to allow for group interests to be followed and individual learning needs to be supported.

Students will be expected to read about 50 pages between each class - quick pages since they’re written in verse! They will write down brief conversation starters, such as something they wondered while reading or an interesting new vocabulary word they discovered. Each book club meeting will involve summarizing and analyzing the key plot elements using a plot diagram, discussions based on student-created conversation starters, an interactive reader response game/activity, and referencing the text to introduce a new focus skill.

Parental Guidance
Inside Out and Back Again is a story of an immigrant, so we will discuss the difficulties immigrants may face as they adjust to new foods, languages, etc. Ha has to deal with mean students at school who have negative ideas about Vietnamese immigrants. They make ethnic jokes and call her names including "pancake face". We will talk about bullying. The backdrop of this story is the Vietnam War, but readers do not hear much about the war and the story is not violent outside of mean schoolchildren. We will keep our discussion age appropriate and learners will be promptly redirected if they bring up inappropriate content.

Hello there! I’m Ms. Davis. I’m here to talk books and help kids to discover (or celebrate!) a love for reading and writing! My classes are primarily discussion-based, but also include explicit instruction, hands on practice, and fun group activities. I offer writing classes that include plenty of social time to share work and connect with peers. I also teach reading classes and book clubs that fall somewhere between structured tutoring and just hanging with friends, talking books.

I’m a passionate and intentional teacher with significant experience teaching virtually, in private tutoring settings, and in a public school. I’m certified in Texas for early childhood through 6th grade with additional GT and ESL endorsements. I currently tutor students K-5 and have 8 years experience teaching grades PreK-4 in a public school.

One of my great strengths as a teacher is my enthusiasm for books and extensive knowledge of children’s literature. My mom is a librarian - and it shows! I love reading children's literature and have a long list of favorites. Recommending the right book at the right time for a student is one of my favorite parts of being an educator!

Another strength is my commitment to supporting and educating the whole child. I regularly integrate social and emotional learning into my classes and believe that learning to be a kind and confident person is as important as learning to read and write. Teaching is so much more than delivering content, it's supporting learners in becoming the best versions of themselves!
