Kick off your summer with an action-oriented camp for high school age students who have a passion for great literature. Learn the ins and outs of what gets banned, by whom, how, what the consequences are, and how to effectively fight bans.

We are going to take a close look at what it means to ban a book across time and place. Sometimes book banning means literally setting books on fire...but sometimes it means using soft banning, fear tactics, and the ripple effect to do the actual work of banning. We'll discuss some of the big ideas and questions surrounding book bans to reflect on and broaden our own understanding of censorship in the world of literature.

What is Book Banning?

We'll take a close look at exactly who is/was driving the forces behind book bans. There are some patterns regarding the type of person or groups who are likely to challenge literature, and we'll look at exactly what is motivating them. Likewise, who is leading the fight against book bans? Where can we find the unsung heroes standing on the side of literature? (If you think you might find that hero at your local library, you are right!) We'll end with a book ban community survey challenge.

Who Bans Books?...and Who Doesn't

Some banned books are not exactly surprising...authors might intentionally push the envelope or overtly venture into controversial territory. But other incredibly innocuous books often make the lists. Many of us know that the Nazis attacked books, burning them in giant bonfires...but do you know which books they burned? We'll look more closely at the themes that seem to get books banned regardless of the time/place, and which themes are very much tied to the place and time in which they exist.

Which Books Get Banned?

So what really happens when a book gets banned? We'll look at the consequences--both the negatives and positives--of having a book get challenged. The fight to ban a book--or to stop a book banning--has the potential to tear communities apart, alter the direction of an entire society, and even ruin the lives of individuals. This is the day that we'll really look closely at what is at stake and why you should care...even about the books you have no desire to actually read.

How Do Bans Effect Books, Authors, Readers and Society?

Today we create an action plan. Let's look closely at exactly where and how book bans begin, perpetuate, and hopefully, end. How have people succeeded in the fight against censorship? We'll find the access points and develop a plan for each of us. Fighting against book bans can mean taking large, political actions, but it can also mean taking quieter, individualized actions. We'll definitely be building a summer reading list; the first step to fight book bans is to read them.
