Courses in this series are a great way to introduce students to American history featuring African Americans through storytelling, learning vocabulary words, and recall. Bold Men in Black History Series will provide a strong foundation for long-term African American history studies. Through this interactive class, students will learn and discuss the following to gain foundational knowledge of who Malcolm X was, the historical period that he lived in, events that shaped his life and American history. • The impact of White Supremacy • Black Legion (Break off from the Ku Klux Klan;KKK. I will only be covering what the group is in general, NOT graphic details) • Nation of Islam • Black Empowerment and Self-Determination • The Civil Rights Movement • Myths about Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. • Pilgrimage to Mecca (The Hadj) • Legacy of Malcolm X Students will engage in thought-provoking dialog with guided questions. I will read an excerpt from one of Malcolm X's speeches and show a video clip of Malcolm X speaking. Lastly, students will participate in a fun review session to assess what they have learned. No prior knowledge of African American history is necessary, only a passion for learning.
Learning Goals
Students will:
• Enhance their critical thinking skills by engaging in thought-provoking dialogue.
• Learn vocabulary words specific to the time period, featured in the Bold Men in Black History series.
• Learn African American history from a decolonized perspective.
• Be able to use decolonized language when speaking about American History.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
I will share with students that Malcolm X was assassinated and provide a definition of assassination as well. I will NOT go into great detail about the event.
Please note: Class may include classroom discussions and videos that may be upsetting to some children if they are not aware of the history of the United States and its treatment of African American people throughout its history.
Given the current events, children may ask questions about what is taking place in our nation. I will share honestly with children and provide them with an age- appropriate response.
Bold Men in Black History Series includes, but is not limited to: poems, songs, video clips of performances, Civil Rights protests, and historical pictures. I will thoughtfully guide students.
Video cameras turned on and the presence of the student are required for the entire class. I require this because learners participate in a variety of ways, verbal and non-verbal. As the material can be sensitive, for some learners, requiring students to have their cameras on helps me to gauge how learners are absorbing the information being shared. If I notice a discomfort for example, during the class, I am able to check in with learners if necessary after class, to assist with any processing of difficult information.

Students will not need any materials for this class. I will be providing a visual guide to share with students during class

The desire and passion for learning more about who I was lead to my pursuit of an academic and professional career in diversity, equity, and inclusion with a focus on "race," culture, and the narrative of African-Americans. My commitment to anti-racism/ anti-oppression work is part of my life's work and contributes to my expertise in educating in a decolonized format and helping others to appreciate cultures that differ from their own.
