Average rating:5.0Number of reviews:(344)
Join me for this one-time class and learn about Bob Marley and the time period in which he lived in. Start to build your foundation of knowledge of African Diaspora history through the Bold Men in Black History Series.

Class experience

Students will:
•	Enhance their critical thinking skills by engaging in thought-provoking dialogue.
•	Learn vocabulary words specific to the time period, featured in the Bold Men in Black History series.
•	Learn about African Diaspora history from a decolonized perspective.
•	Be able to use decolonized language when speaking about history.
My mother helped me develop a strong foundation in African American history through books, magazines, movies, documentaries, and more, as my K-12 education provided a limited perspective of African American history. The desire and passion for learning more about who I was lead to my pursuit of an academic and professional career in diversity, equity, and inclusion with a focus on "race," culture, and the narrative of African-Americans. My commitment to anti-racism/ anti-oppression work is part of my life's work and contributes to my expertise in educating in a decolonized format and helping others to appreciate cultures that differ from their own.

I want to share and inspire all children (and their parents) to learn and think critically about American history and other cultural studies from a decolonized perspective.

The following course work is related to Social Science, Anti-racism/Anti- Oppression, African American, and African Diaspora Studies I have taken:
● African-American Experience in the Arts
● Contemporary Social Problems
● History of Modern Africa
● Managerial Behavior in Cross-Cultural Setting
● Latin American Cultural Identity (focusing on Afro-Brazilians)
● Contemporary Africa
● Contemporary World Issues
● Latin American Popular Culture
● Black Psychology
● Slavery in the Antebellum South
● Social Problems in Latin American History (focused on Afro-Latinos (x))
● Politics in Africa
● African American History
● Multicultural Education
● Group Dynamics (Counseling)
● Educating to Counter Oppressions
● Queer Studies
● Interreligious Dialogue
Students will not need any materials for this class. I will be providing a visual guide to share with students during class.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Please note: Class may include classroom discussions and videos that may be upsetting to some children if they are not aware of the history of the United States and its treatment of African American people and people of the African diaspora throughout history.

Given the current events, children may ask questions about what is taking place in our nation. I will share honestly with children and provide them with an age- appropriate response.

Bold Men in Black History Series includes, but is not limited to: poems, songs, video clips of performances, Civil Rights protests, and historical pictures. I will thoughtfully guide students.

Video cameras turned on and the presence of the student are required for the entire class. I require this because learners participate in a variety of ways, verbal and non-verbal. As the material can be sensitive, for some learners, requiring students to have their cameras on helps me to gauge how learners are absorbing the information being shared. If I notice a discomfort for example, during the class, I am able to check in with learners if necessary after class, to assist with any processing of difficult information.
