In this one-time class students will learn how to combine oil pastel and watercolor to create a beautiful butterfly. The oil pastel crayon acts as a resist so that the watercolor glides over it, leaving the color only in certain areas. During this class we will talk about the parts of a butterfly and students will follow me step-by-step as we create together. Another technique we will experiment with is adding salt to our watercolor to achieve interesting effects. Students don't need any specific skills or knowledge to take this class. We will practice with our oil pastel and watercolor/salt techniques before applying what we have learned to create our pictures.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Kelly and I have been a teacher for 30+ years. I homeschooled my 2 daughters so I've taught just about every subject, but my favorites are math and art. I have a degree in Elementary Education and a Masters in Gifted and Talented Education. My passion is making learning fun for kids through activities, laughter and helping students understand what they're learning. When I teach I think it's important for kids to understand the "why" behind what we do, whether its adding fractions, making a shade of red, or looking at why squirrels go "back and forth" while trying to cross the street (it's actually because they're trying to confuse the driver of the car which they think is an animal). I love squirrels but also enjoy jigsaw puzzles and anything creative!
