Bluey and Spelling

Students are introduced to a letter and practice hearing and making letter sounds. We watch a short 2-3 minute clip of the cartoon Bluey together as a group. Afterward, we practice writing letters and words we heard in the show together.

Class Experience

US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - 1
Bluey and Spelling is a class that focuses on writing and spelling letters and words. Students will practice word sounds, write letters, write words, learn spelling techniques, and grow their understanding of the written word. Students will have fun spelling the things that they hear spoken aloud in short clips of the cartoon Bluey that will be streamed directly to them, with no need for the student to use any outside website on their own.

==== Lesson 1 ==== Wednesday, December 4th ==== Topic: P Words & The Silent E
Episode: Pass the Parcel (S3E13) 

Students are introduced to the letter P in uppercase and lowercase, and hear what it sounds like. They will also practice writing it.
Students will watch a short 2-3 minute clip from the Bluey episode "Pass The Parcel", and write the following P words: Play, Pass, Prize.
The class will discuss the silent "e" and the way it changes a vowel in a word.

==== Lesson 2 ==== Wednesday, December 11th ==== Topic: B Words & The Silent E
Episode: Hospital (S1E2) 

Students are introduced to the letter B in uppercase and lowercase, and hear what it sounds like. They will also practice writing it.
Students will watch a short 2-3 minute clip from the Bluey episode "Hospital", and write the following B words: Baby, Belly, Big, Blue.
The class will discuss the silent "e" and the way it changes a vowel in a word.

==== Lesson 3 ==== Wednesday, December 18th ==== Topic: G Words & The OO Vowel Sound
Episode: Keepy Uppy (S1E3) 

Students are introduced to the letter G in uppercase and lowercase, and hear what it sounds like. They will also practice writing it.
Students will watch a short 2-3 minute clip from the Bluey episode "Keepy Uppy", and write the following B words: Good, Got, Game, Go
The class will discuss and practice the long and short "oo" vowel sound.

==== Lesson 4 ==== Wednesday, January 1st ==== Topic: S Words & The SH Sound
Episode: Horsey Ride (S1E9)

Students are introduced to the letter S in uppercase and lowercase, and hear what it sounds like. They will also practice writing it.
Students will watch a short 2-3 minute clip from the Bluey episode "Horsey Ride", and write the following S words: Say, She, Some, Said
The class will discuss and practice the "sh" sound.

==== Lesson 5 ==== Wednesday, January 8th ==== Topic: C Words & C Sounds
Episode: The Claw (S1E19)

Students are introduced to the letter C in uppercase and lowercase, and hear what it sounds like. They will also practice writing it.
Students will watch a short 2-3 minute clip from the Bluey episode "The Claw", and write the following C words: Claw, Coin, Can, Cents
The class will discuss the different sounds that the letter C can make.

==== Lesson 6 ==== Wednesday, January 15th ==== Topic: W Words &  WH Words
Episode: Wagon Ride (S1E24)

Students are introduced to the letter W in uppercase and lowercase, and hear what it sounds like. They will also practice writing it.
Students will watch a short 2-3 minute clip from the Bluey episode "Wagon Ride", and write the following W words: Why, Wagon, What, Want
The class will discuss the "5 W's" (who, what, where, when, why) and how they are spelled with W and H.

Parental Guidance
According to Common Sense Media, the cartoon Bluey is appropriate for children ages 4+. Video will be streamed directly to the children and they have no need to use any outside websites on their own.
Supply List
Students will need either:
A. A pencil, eraser, and paper to write on.

OR

B. A dry-erase board, dry-erase marker, and an eraser. (Estimated cost: $5-$8 USD)
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

I am an experienced public school reading group teacher. I have lead reading groups for first and fifth graders in an elementary school, and also assistant taught preschool classes where reading stories and teaching the letters of the alphabet were a daily occurance. I have a bachelor's degree and years of experience working with and reading to children of all ages.
