Description

Class Experience

Week 1: Students will learn how to play the Happy Birthday melody in the right hand with a swing rhythm.
Week 2: Students will learn basic improvisational techniques to improvise in the right hand over the Happy Birthday melody.
Week 3: Students will learn chord roots and chord progressions in the left hand to accompany Happy Birthday.
Week 4: Students will combine hands to play an improvised Happy Birthday melody in the right hand and a standard blues chord progression in the left hand.
I have a bachelor's degree in Music Education from SUNY Fredonia, a master’s degree of Kodály in Music Education from Loyola University Maryland, and over a decade experience of Blues/Boogie Woogie improvisation on the piano. I'm incredibly passionate about passing on what I've learned about piano improvisation to students, as I wish I had more access to high quality improvisation instruction when I was younger.
Students will need to practice throughout the week. While individual practice needs differ by student, I recommend 10-20 minutes of daily practice.

Student assignments will include watching my instructional videos, uploading their own video and commenting on a classmates' video.
Students will need a keyboard or a piano. It is recommended to point the camera at the keys if possible when recording. Students will need a device capable of recording and uploading a video (ex: a phone, tablet, or computer).
Students will upload a video of their instruction. I will provide individualized feedback on their videos.
No live meetings, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
We will refer to the traditional "Happy Birthday" song throughout the course.

About Me

Hearing Pete Johnson for the first time changed my life. Building on a strong foundation of classical piano, I immediately began learning to play blues piano. Since learning to improvise, there's been no going back for me.
