Class Experience

In this class, we will be sketching and painting a beautiful bird, known as the Bluejay.
My teaching style is relaxed and peaceful, with an emphasis on enjoying the process, vs. worrying about creating a “perfect” painting. Some drawing and/or watercolor painting experience would be helpful, but is not necessary. I firmly believe that anyone with interest, and willingness to try, can have a really enjoyable experience in this class.

Class will begin with going over materials, and then dive right into the creative process. We start by sketching the bird, using simple shapes, and a step by step process with clear instructions. After we have our foundational sketch, we will begin painting, using simple, layered washes and brush strokes to create a finished piece.

At the end of class, students will be invited to share their work, to receive feedback from the instructor and share their favorite part of their painting with the rest of the class. This show and tell is a fun encouraging way to end the class, but is not required.

Feel free to message me if you have any questions or want to schedule a private class!
Learning Goals
The class objectives (outside of an enjoyable experience and a pretty painting) are to break down a complex image into simple shapes, and learning some basic sketching and watercolor methods.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi there!

My name is Abi. My passion and expertise are in drawing and watercolor painting, but I also dabble in and have taught the basics in a few other mediums, such as acrylic painting, oil pastel, charcoal, and colored pencil.

I’ve been drawing and painting since very early childhood and have always embraced it as a part of who I am, and known it to be valuable resource in my life. A lot of my inspiration comes from the landscapes I grew up with or the feelings the weather or a book inspired in me. I believe that art is an outlet for both processing feelings or events through life, and is an underused tool to develop skills in observation and critical thinking. My teaching style is calm and centered in being a safe space and showing that the creative process can provide joy and peace. Mistakes happen, but its never the end of the world or something to be ashamed of. I'm dedicated to helping people better understand the world around them and to developing relationships to enrich life through art. I believe anyone who is interested and willing to try can become an artist.

I have been an art teacher for four years, and before that had six years of experience in support roles providing supervision and guidance to children within classroom and day-care settings.

In my free time I enjoy being outside, knitting, crocheting and am a big fiction reader. This year I hope to use my sketchbook practice to document my walks, bird sightings, and travels.
