I am a former classroom teacher now traveling the world and selling my jewelry at art fairs and craft shows. I have only recently started making beaded jewelry and have had great success selling these pieces at art fairs.
Homework Offered
Students will be asked to make a beaded jewelry piece to show and tell about at the beginning of our next class.0 - 1 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Grades Offered
Students should have enough dexterity and strength to manipulate the tools.
NOTE: Don’t worry if you don’t have all of the materials for the entire course on the first day. For the first day we will be making hooped earrings so just make sure you have the fish hooks, earring wire, beads in variety of colors that you would like to see on an earring and jump rings. DAY ONE: EARRINGS * 1 pack of earring fish hooks with coils * 1 pack of mixed sizes earring wire ( hoop style ) * size 6/0 seed beads in at least 3 different colors * 1 pack of jump rings in various sizes. NOTE: Students should get the same color jump rings, earring wire and earring fish hooks if possible. DAY TWO: NECKLACE All of the above tools can be used to make necklaces as well but in addition to the tools above you will also need bead stringing wire: * 1 “pack” Beadalon ( trademarked name ) .020 diameter 30 foot, flexible 7 strand bead stringing wire - 1 “pack” * 1 pack of “Lobster Clasps”. These come in a pack of many or you can purchase a few in a pack. I suggest getting at least 10 so your teen can make at least 5 necklaces and 5 bracelets. These pieces are small so they can fall and then get lost in the carpet shag or behind furniture so make sure you have enough to cover these situations. The price varies greatly on these. I recently found them at Walmart for a decent price. * 1 pack of assorted crimp beads ( different sizes and colors ) * 1 pair crimp forming pliers ( not the micro crimp pliers ) * flexible measuring tape ( not a ruler ) * Bead Organizer Trays or Containers to keep beads organized and easily accessible during the bracelet-making process. DAY THREE STRETCH BRACELET * pair of scissors or cutter * .032 inch ( 0.8 mm) transparent stretch cord * variety of beads in different colors, shapes, and sizes. Make sure the hole diameter of the beads accommodates .032 in or 0.8mm stretch cord. Aim for beads with holes large enough to easily thread the cord through. Recommended bead sizes: 6mm to 10mm diameter. * Measuring tape or ruler to determine wrist size * Optional: Bead Design Board: Helps in planning the layout and design of the bracelet before stringing the beads onto the cord. * Optional: Bead Stopper or Tape: Used to secure one end of the cord while stringing the beads to prevent them from sliding off. * Optional: Crimp Beads or Knot Covers: If desired, to secure the ends of the stretch cord after threading the beads. IMPORTANT NOTE: To determine the largest size bead that can be used with a specific diameter of elastic cord or bead stringing wire, we need to consider the diameter of the bead hole. Typically, beads with holes slightly larger than the cord diameter are preferred for easy stringing without causing strain on the cord. For a .032-inch diameter elastic cord, you would want beads with holes slightly larger than .032 inches to allow smooth stringing. A safe estimate might be beads with a hole diameter of around .035 to .040 inches. It's essential to test the bead size with the cord prior to the start of our class to ensure a proper fit before stringing all the beads onto the bracelet. I would hate for your student to not have the proper bead size and combination of cord diameter. TOOLS 🛠 There are 2 options for purchasing the tools needed. OPTION #1: * 1 pair of Round nose pliers * 1 pair of wire Cutters * 1 pair of flat nose pliers Each of these tools are essential to making jewelry. But you can also purchase a 3-in-one tool to save on costs but then you will still need a separate pair of flat nosed pliers to use together with the 3-in-one tool to perform certain techniques. OPTION #2: * 1 Bead Landing (trademarked name) 3-in-1 Pliers * 1 pair of Flat Nosed Pliers Option #2 is a great way to get started making jewelry. Once your teen REALLY gets the jewelry making bug or decides to create a jewelry making business then you can purchase each of these tools independently. Good tools are absolutely essential and will greatly influence the quality of the pieces being made. If you have any questions on materials or if you are not sure what to purchase please don’t hesitate to reach out to me. Please send me a list of the supplies you have so that I can be sure you are ready for class each week.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
We will be using wire cutters and crimp tools. The wire cutter works much like a scissor and is equally as dangerous. Care needs to be taken when handling the wire cutter because it can nip, scratch, cut or pierce through skin. The crimp tool is used to press a metal tube closed around the wire and can present the danger of pinching fingers or any skin close to the tool when using it so care needs to be taken. Beads come in various shapes, sizes and finishes and can be dangerous. Please check the manufacturers label for any warnings with respect to the beads you decide to purchase.
