Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 1
Beginner Level
Does your child have a good grasp on letter sounds, but could use more help with blends, and reading short vowel words?

WHAT?
This class is designed to ensure that your child learns how to blend sounds, read blends within words, and find blends. In addition, we will learn/review sight words that will also help support your child in their reading adventures.

HOW?
Teacher Monica loves teaching with pictures, puppets, music and much more. Teacher Monica will give explicit instructions for reading blends. Students will follow along using TPR (Total Physical Response - hand motions) to enhance memory and skills. In addition, we will read sentences with words that have been learned in the current day's lesson. We will review and re-cap, often, to check for comprehension. The students will leave the classroom, being able to share their new learned knowledge from class.

BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENT:
Students should already be familiar with the basic letters AND sounds of the alphabet.
If a student doesn't know all of their letter sounds, decoding words can be very difficult.

Weekly Schedule:

Week 1 : br , sl
Week 2 : ch , sh
Week 3 : bl , cl
Week 4 : gl , fl

Each week I will introduce a new sight word. During week 1, I will quickly assess the group, in order to decide which sights word will be covered. All students will be met at their level. No student will be left behind or not reached.

I am currently a third grade teacher, this is my fourth year teaching third grade. Previously, I taught first grade for three years. I really enjoyed teaching reading to my first grade students. During my time with teaching first grade, I was also an intervention teacher that help students that were having a difficult time reading on grade level. I love to see the light bulb turn on. I love to have fun while teaching, so that students can develop a love for learning.
