Blender 3D Modeling - Summer Camp - Model a Sci Fi Base
Class experience
CLASS DESCRIPTION If you have seen 3D models in video games and movies and want to learn how to create your own, this class is a great place to start. This class is open to beginner and experienced Blender users. Everyone will work at their own pace. We will cover 3D modeling tools including extrude, loop cut, inset, proportional editing and more as we create a Sci Fi Base using smaller modular parts (towers, rooms, hallways, props) that we then assemble into larger structures. 5 lessons//1 Week
Week 1Lesson 1Modeling Basic ArchitectureStudents will need to have Blender already installed and running for their first day of class. We will use modeling tools (extrude, inset, bevel, loop cut, etc) to create basic rooms, hallways, and other architecture. This will include the use and manipulation of 3D primitives such as cubes, spheres, cylinders, toruses. We will also explore how to duplicate our base shapes to quickly iterate a larger variety of structures.Lesson 2Adding Details to ArchitectureAfter finishing our basic architecture, we will add in windows, doors, and other openings to enhance their detail and appeal. Other adjustments will also include beveling edges, extruding faces, scaling, moving, and rotating basic geometry to add more character. Scale will be emphasized so students start thinking about how a character might move about the 3d space in a movie or game.Lesson 3Modeling PropsNext we will model props such as satellite dishes, control centers, power generators, vents, storage tanks and more to add a sense of story when combined with the architecture. We will learn how to duplicate objects and use their base shapes to then add more detail. We will also explore how to distort, age, and destroy objects to show aging.Lesson 4Applying Materials to ModelsWith all of our modular architecture and props complete, we will now apply materials to them such as metal, plastic, and glass to give more character. Students will also learn how to adjust some of the materials to customize their color. They will learn about terms that define materials such as rough, smooth, metallic, and emission. A texture will be provided so they can get a brief introduction to UV mapping, which they will be able to scale and adjust.Lesson 5Assembling, Rendering, and LightingWe will assemble all of the modular parts to make a final Sci Fi base with hallways, buildings, and props. Extra work can include adding a network of tubes and pipes to connect all of the structures to a power source and communication system. As students work, they will be encouraged to explore the function of their base and a backstory which could add to the purpose of their creations. Once finished, students will learn how to arrange lights and render a final image of their model.
The main goal is to make sure students can understand and use the techniques introduced in class successfully on their own time. The focus is on progress, not perfection.
Please watch my teacher profile video to learn more. https://outschool.com/teachers/lukas-allenbaugh I have been teaching art (animation, illustration, sculpture, painting, and digital art) to elementary and teenage students consistently for over 25 years. My teaching includes 4 years as a public school teacher, 15 years as the owner of the Creative Art Network (after-school, during school, and summer programs) and 12 years as an artist in residence (mural painting focus). I've also been designing elaborate video tutorials since 2008 for a large variety of mediums. I love what I do and that passion drives my ongoing learning. I’ve studied traditional art through Cornish College of the Arts, Western Wa University, and a variety of other classes. The source of my ongoing digital art training (Primarily 2d digital illustration and animation and 3D modeling and animation) is through Animation Mentor, Think Tank Training Center of Canada, CG Masters academy, CG Boost Academy, Udemy, Skillshare, InLearning, and much more
Homework Offered
Homework will include a description of possible ways to keep practicing with the concepts learned for each class session. For example, if we are working on applying materials, students can experiment with adding more materials once class is over using the methods covered in class.1 - 2 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Grades Offered
All levels of learners are welcome!
NOTE: Students need to be able to share their screen to get help in class. Please test ahead of time to make sure this is possible.
