Class Experience

Students will be introduced to psychology and how these ideas can be applied to their lives.  This will be taught lecture style which will lead to discussion regarding the topics and applied to students lives in order to enhance understanding.  

LESSON ONE:
Lecture - What is psychology? Introduction to branches of psychology: cognitive, psycho analysis, social learning theory
Group discussion of why should we study psychology and how can we apply this to our lives?
Students will be introduced to an inquiry project and will be encouraged to work on this with ideas brought to the next class on what they plan to research

LESSON TWO:
Lecture - The Brain and Teenage Brains 
Different parts of the brain and their functions will be discussed. We will also look at the differences and advantages the teen brain possesses and how these have benefitted the human race.
Class discussion on how we can apply these ideas to our own lives
Students will discuss inquiry project in more detail and share their findings.  Students will be encouraged to work on this  inquiry project outside of class. 

LESSON THREE:
Lecture: Stress and Vulnerability
How does your body react to stress? What biological things are happening when you are stressed? What types of stress are there? How can we help to control our reactions to stress?
Class discussion on how we can apply these theories to our own lives
Students will discuss inquiry project in more detail and share their findings.  Students will be encouraged to work on this  inquiry project outside of class. 

LESSON FOUR:
Lecture: The Science of Love
How is your brain involved in love?
What parts of your brain are involved and how does that affect our perception of being in love?  
Class discussion on how we can apply these ideas and theories to our own lives
Students will discuss inquiry project in more detail and share their findings.  Students will be encouraged to work on this  inquiry project outside of class. 

LESSON FIVE:
Lecture: Positive Psychology
What is it and what can we learn from it? Different techniques used in positive psychology will be presented and ways we can control our reactions to the things around us.
Class discussion on how we can apply these ideas and theories to our own lives
Students will present their research findings to the class.

Students will learn about the field of psychology through lectures, videos and group discussions.  They will also enhance their research and presentation skills.

I am an Ontario Certified Teacher with a Bachelor of Education and a Bachelor of Arts.  I am in my 14th year of teaching and have been teaching Social Sciences for 5 years.  I regularly teach Anthropology, Psychology and Sociology to High School students in Ontario and have my specialist qualifications in Family Studies. My Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Education and Advanced Degree in Education all included numerous pyschology and sociology courses focused on the topics I will present.  Furthermore, I have attended numerous workshops on Mental Health which have increased my knowledge of brain functions and brain health.  I also have my qualifications in Guidance which allows me to provide counseling to students and to help to recognize various mental health issues they may be experiencing.  Finally, I have also attended various workshops on Mental Health First Aid training which is very focused on the topics I will cover in the class.  On my own time I regularly research and read about Psychology and any advances we have made in research and how I can apply these in my psychology classroom.
