Black Out & Slam Poetry and the Spoken Word
What's included
2 live meetings
1 hrs 30 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
In this two meeting class, students will engage their individuality by pulling words they connect with out of existing, provided text to create entirely new pieces of Black Out & Slam Poetry, then share their new creations through Spoken Word, as inspired by America's Got Talent 2020 winner Brandon Leake. I had the vision to create a Black Out Poetry class prior to seeing a past season of America's Got Talent; however, when I watched Brandon Leake's performances, I felt motived and moved to finalize my idea ... and here we are! During our first meeting, I will define Black Out poetry and Slam poetry and provide examples. We will create poetry together as a class. Then for my out-of-Class Assignment, I will provide PDFs for students to print and use to create new pieces of art. This is done by blacking out and therefore, isolating or highlighting, specific words or short phrases. While students will be utilizing the same existing text, each completed Black Out poetry piece will be different since students will connect with the text in their own unique ways, tapping into their own thoughts, feelings, experiences, and opinions. Once done, an entirely new piece emerges. In our second class meeting, students will share their Black Out Poetry through Spoken Word during our Slam or "open mic" session time as peers listen respectively. Since Spoken Word and Slam Poetry interconnects and embodies both audio and visual, students must be willing to utilize both audio and video and to fully engage in this class, which includes participation during our "open mic" Slam session of our second class meeting. Class will be locked 10 min from start to avoid disruption and for student and teacher overall enjoyment.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Students will be provided PDFs of existing text/material to use for creating their own Black Out poetry; however, the manner in which the supplied text speaks to individual students will vary. Thus, final works of art might have strong or powerful meanings. I encourage students to exercise awareness; however, welcome their insight and personal thoughts, feelings, and opinions that can come through.
Supply List
Students will be provided with existing text PDFs that they will need to print for the out-of-Class Assignments.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello. I began my teaching career as a Highschool Student in 1987 as a State Certified Preschool Teacher. I attended USF (University of South Florida) in Tampa, FL and earned my Bachelor's Degree, cum laude, in Elementary Ed grades 1-6. I added two additional Certifications: English grades 6-12 and PreK-Primary (age 3 to grade 3). I am currently waiting for my Autism Endorsement to process through the DoE.
**I am very proud to say Outschool informed me Fall 2019 that I was the first to be approved for an Autism Social Club - I am honored to be a part of your child’s life**
I currently teach 1st grade in a small private school. Previously, I was a Lead VPK (Voluntary PreK) Teacher and have taught various grade levels in Preschools, Public and Private Schools from age 2 years old on up into high school with our own boys in our Home School Program. I've earned "Highly Effective" in all areas and love teaching.
I Homeschooled for 22 years - and even taught at public school, then VPK at a private school as I continued our Home School. Over the years, I have volunteered for our state-wide Homeschool Association and sat on our County School Board Homeschool Portfolio Review Committee. I pride myself on searching for ways to accommodate and adjust as needed to learner styles. I enjoy assisting families in their education decisions. I am special needs sensitive in the areas of ASD, TS, ADHD, and Gifted. Not only have I taught those with these diverse challenges in my classroom settings, but I am also parenting my own children who have them as well. Our Family is walking through a new Season with the passing of our Precious young son (Jan 2021).
Interesting facts about our Family: we have three SPCA rescued cats and enjoy playing Tennis and watching movies in our backyard home theatre :)
