Some scary stories, video clips and history may be frightening for students. I recommend going through the course material/content as a family. This class will also engage with select clips from Lovecraft Country (TV-MA), Get Out (R), & Us (R). While the TV show/films are not holistically suitable for children under the age of 17, we will NOT engage with the graphic content of the selected media, only interacting with intentionally selected clips to understand the thematic and symbolic work at play within the Black horror genre, while also exploring the literary and film devices employed in this work. Overall, the course content is a combination of primary sources, interactive Google Slides & YouTube videos. Lovecraft Country: "Letitia Lewis Bat/Car Scene" (YouTube) Get Out: "The Sunken Place Scene", "Get Out of Here Scene" (YouTube) Us: "Hall of Mirrors" (YouTube)
Slave Ghost Stories: Tales of Hags, Hants, Ghosts, & Diamondback Rattlers by Nancy Rhyne Lovecraft Country by Matt Ruff & Unofficial Syllabi by Langston League Lovecraft Country (Television Show) Get Out, Us, & NOPE | Jordan Peele Films Moaning Bones: African-American Ghost Stories by James Haskins Conjuring Worlds: An Afrofuturist Textbook for Middle and High School Students by B Sharise Moore
