Class Experience

What do aliens drink when it's cold???
***Gravi-TEA!!!*** 😁

Outer space is one of my favorite things to talk about, especially with children! I have found the enthusiasm with this subject to be contagious, and nothing thrills me more than a student that gets excited about outer space. No matter how old I get, I still love discovering new things about it. Luckily for all of us, there seems to be a brand new discovery or event every single day! In this class, we will discuss the mysterious black holes and all the theories (and arguments) that go along with them. The beauty of this class for me is getting to hear what my students predict to be inside and on the other side of black holes. The truth is, no one really knows! Not Albert Einstein, not Stephen Hawking (2 notorious names we will talk about in this class as well), no one. So the theories that the students come up with are as acceptable as even the great scientists that helped contribute to our beliefs. This class excites me so much, and I look forward to teaching it and being a part of the students' exploration of these wonderous celestial objects. Our main focus will be the 3 types of black holes (Stellar, Intermediate, and Supermassive), how we think they are formed, and what exists inside and on the other side. We will talk about popular theories attached, such as the General Theory of Relativity and Hawking Radiation. However, this class is open to discuss all things pertaining to outer space. Students can expect a conversational style class with plenty of open dialogue and questioning about all things space related. We will let the discussion guide us at times if everyone is participating. Everyone's opinion is welcome, as I want all students to feel comfortable interacting with me, and each other. We will learn fun facts about each type of black hole, tell jokes, and I will send a Blooket game after class that covers what we discussed (You do not need a Blooket account. My link will take you directly to the game. 😁). Whether it's a one-on-one class or a group environment, my number one goal of every class is to inspire a love of learning new things.

Learning Goals

My main goal as a teacher is always to launch a lifetime of space exploration and curiosity for my students, and inspire an enthusiasm in them to learn more about what exists beyond Earth. In this class, students will discover the unique qualities that each type of black hole has, qualities that make them stand out from the rest. We will discuss in detail the most popular theories (and some less believed ones as well) that are attached to black holes. Finally, my favorite part about this class is getting to hear what each student believes about these objects and things that peak their curiosities, because the concept of black holes is shrouded in mystery and fascination. I want to help motivate an excitement and passion to explore that! Blast off with me!
