This class will offer an in depth explanation of how black holes are formed, how we detect them and what the nature of gravity really is.

This class will cover the following topics: 1. What Newton thought about gravity 2. What Einstein thought about gravity 3. The evolution of stars and the death of a massive star 4. How do we detect black holes? 5. How strong are black holes and what would happen if you fell into one? The class will begin with a warm up and a quick icebreaker followed by a small lecture where students are encouraged to ask questions. During the lecture students will be asked to reflect on their learning and to engage with other students. There will be a video clip and a short game on Kahoot followed by a quick writing exercise to show that they have mastered the material. No prior knowledge of Astronomy is needed.
Learning Goals
Students will understand how black holes are formed and what happens to matter falling into a black hole.
