In this eight-week course, we will dive into the science behind black holes. Learners will explore our current understanding of these mysterious objects and their influence on spacetime. In addition, students will learn about the physics and space science that underpin our understanding of black holes. Topics will range from the anatomy of black holes to how they were discovered and how we study them. This course is perfect for the space enthusiast who wants to explore beyond the basics. We will investigate questions such as: What is a black hole? What is general relativity? How do we detect black holes? How were they predicted and discovered? What is time dilation? What roles do black holes play in galactic structure? How do black holes influence spacetime? This is a highly interactive course. Students will learn through an image and video filled presentation and discussion. Students’ participation and questions are regularly encouraged. Classes are designed to encourage student engagement and follow their curiosity. Week One: Introduction Week Two: History and Discovery Week Three: General Relativity Week Four: Physical Properties Week Five: Real Life Example Week Six: How We Study Black Holes Week Seven: Information Loss Paradox Week Eight: Unsolved Mysteries and Future Exploration There is no prerequisite for this class, but it is assumed that the learner already has a deep interest in the space sciences.
