In this class, I will inspire learner's curiosity about history and an aspect of the African-American cultural experience by sharing audio and video clips of negro spirituals. We will discuss the variations of spirituals based on three distinct periods of time: during enslavement, during emancipation, and during the Civil Rights Movement. This will be a rich and dynamic learning experience as there are aspects of vocabulary, regional origins, history, and historical figures I will include in our discussion. This class is designed to be interactive between myself and all of the learners enrolled. Your learner will have plenty of opportunities to ask questions and share their experiences learning any of the songs I share, or others. While keeping this experience fun and lighthearted, I will use a three-circle Venn diagram to encourage comparisons and contrasts of the spirituals from the three distinct types of spirituals introduced. (Please note this is the two-part version of this class. I also offer a one-time longer class of the same content. You may choose which version is most appropriate for your learner.)
Learning Goals
Learners will compare and contrast spirituals from three time periods via a Venn diagram.
Learners will identify the unique vocabulary used in the lyrics of the spirituals.
Learners will be able to identify what period of time a spiritual was popularized based on the lyrics and style.
Learners will be able to articulate the purpose of spirituals.

Parental Guidance
Please note this class is not a religious studies class. By the very nature of the topic, some of the lyrics in the spirituals shared during class will have religious references. The content of this class will not be focused on anything religious, though your learner may hear lyrics related to religion. Please know that I am also a mother, not just a teacher, and I am well experienced in ensuring the inclusion of all different identities in a class no matter the subject matter.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
I'm Kristina...wife, mom of three boys and constant learner. I was a 2nd grade ESL teacher back in the day. I earned my graduate degree in education, yet have found I learn the most by remaining curious. I am a girly, girl at heart but have learned, in part from my sons, to be comfortable getting messy for the sake of learning (and just for fun)! I value the relationships in my life, accessibility of educational opportunities, travel, and exploring a variety of ways toward personal growth.

A few of my core educational beliefs:
Everyone has strengths.
There are never too many questions.
We all don't have to learn the same way.
Curiosity can (and should) be a spark.
Try it. Test it. Challenge it.
In a safe space, take risks.
No one can be a better you than you.
Be open. Be kind.
Have fun.
I am committed to being the best human being I can. My classes don't have a religious aspect, they are created to allow each student to gain greater self-awareness. With such awareness, students will be able to apply what they learn toward living their best life, whatever that means for them/your family. I am looking forward to sharing my interests and knowledge with you/your child(ren).
