Description

Class Experience

This class is taught in English.
The learning goal of this initial level is to lay down the foundational skills young readers need to learn to become independent readers. We'll be introducing, assessing and practicing skills in the following 5 areas:

- textual and print organization of the page/book,
- phonological awareness
- alphabetical awareness
- phonics
- general reading fluency

As classes progress, we'll review common spelling patterns, basic organization and features of print, punctuation, phonological awareness and more! We'll use the words, characters and themes from each book to do games and activities that recycle and recontextualize the material for deeper reading comprehension and retention, such as: going on a "phonics scavenger hunt" in the world of the book, adding the "missing chapter" that we wish had been there, turning a theme from the book into a personal art project or researching a fun fact from a non-fiction book in the real world!.
I have over 20 years of teaching experience as well as specialized training in the skills we'll use in the class. I've also taught this class for over a year in public and private schools in Hong Kong, Korea and Taiwan honing the approach, goals and side-projects along the way. Besides two separate 160 hour TESOL certifications for English teaching, I have been trained in evaluating, administering and prep for the most important international English exams from the initial ones like "PET" all the way to university level entrance exams like "IELTS" and "TOEFL" and even certifications for professionals! I also had countless hours of in-service training at schools I've taught at (i.e. British Council among others) for reading skills, comprehension, fluency and much more!
There's no homework in this one-time class. Homework is optional in the on-going class but will take the form of special projects for regular attendees.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
30 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
