Symbiosis is the close interaction between two different species. In some cases these species depend on each other for survival, in other cases one species harms the other for its own survival. Whatever the outcome, symbiotic relationships are some of the most fascinating situations in the living world. Through discussion and many examples students will learn what a symbiotic relationship is. They will also learn about the three kinds of symbiotic relationships: parasitism, mutualism and commensalism. Students will compare and contrast these different relationships, as well as examine how these relationships exist between a wide variety of living things (plants, animals, fungi, etc). We will end the class by classifying novel examples and non-examples of symbiosis, and the students will be encouraged to provide the reasons for each classification.
Learning Goals
Students will be able to identify and explain the three kinds of symbiotic relationships (parasitism, mutualism and comensalism).

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello, I want to share the endless topics of interest contained in biology.
I have a bachelors in environmental science with a major in conservation biology, as well as a bachelors in education. I developed science clubs for after school programs and have worked as a teacher for four years. Although biology is my favourite science I have taught physics, chemistry and earth sciences.
I believe every subject has inherent value. The more we learn about our world, the more we see and engage with our world. I want to help my students see a bit more of their world.
Fun Fact: I love to travel and the pictures I most want to share are the ones I take of insects! I read everything from history and literature to science textbooks and popular fiction.
