Natural selection is a concept that underpins all of biology. In this class we will discuss many classic examples of natural selection. These examples include Darwin's finches as well as Peppered Moths during the industrial revolution. The concepts of natural selection that we will focus on are variation and competition. We will explore how different species can compete leading to specialization. For example, grazing animals on the Serengeti have developed slightly different preferences and eating patterns overtime. We will also explore how species of the same kind can compete and this can lead to change overtime. Through discussions students will apply the concepts of natural selection to explain and predict novel scenarios. We will also examine natural selection principles as they have been applied by people in breeding plants and animals. Students will be presented with a scenario and asked what traits they would favour in a dog or cat breed.
Learning Goals
Students will demonstrate an understanding of natural selection. They will recognize that differences between species and within species changes the chance that a living thing will survive. Students will apply this knowledge to real world examples.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello, I want to share the endless topics of interest contained in biology.
I have a bachelors in environmental science with a major in conservation biology, as well as a bachelors in education. I developed science clubs for after school programs and have worked as a teacher for four years. Although biology is my favourite science I have taught physics, chemistry and earth sciences.
I believe every subject has inherent value. The more we learn about our world, the more we see and engage with our world. I want to help my students see a bit more of their world.
Fun Fact: I love to travel and the pictures I most want to share are the ones I take of insects! I read everything from history and literature to science textbooks and popular fiction.
