One of a series of classes on the main concepts in biology, this hour will cover how and why biologists classify living things.
Class experience
We will use discussion and lecture, worksheets, diagrams, video clips and demonstrations. Topics covered will be the groupings of organisms from domain through kingdom, phylum and on down to genus and species. We will also cover the significance of and reasons for biologists categorizing living things, and the features on which those categories are based. Students will be able to explain how and why biologists classify organisms. Students will be able to list the classification scheme from domain to species, and trace human beings through the scheme. Students will be able to discuss the main features differentiating groups of living things.
