Homework
1 hour per week. Carefully selected video links will be provided the day after class for additional learning on the topic of the week. Optional projects will also be suggested for completion outside of class time.

Class Experience

Beginner - Intermediate Level
Students will participate in our weekly live online discussions and see a PowerPoint presentation as we explore the veterinary care needed for, and many medical conditions that we see in these exotic and pocket pet species. Additional carefully selected YouTube videos will be provided after class for students who would like additional learning. 

Topics vary depending on species but may include; parasites, dental care, medical conditions, common diseases, metabolic considerations/ issues 

***This class will not be a place to get medical questions answered about your own pets. If your pet has a problem or you have questions about their health, please contact your local veterinarian.

**** It is highly recommended that you do plenty of research and locate an exotics vet in your area BEFORE getting an exotic pet.

Learning Goals

Learners will begin to develop their knowledge on a variety of exotic pet veterinary care.
Learners will develop their critical thinking skills as they participate in discussions and question/answer with the teacher and classmates.

Curriculum

6 Lessons
over 6 Weeks
Lesson 1:
Rodents
 Guinea Pigs, hamsters, gerbils, rats - This lesson will discuss how the vet will hold these little ones and give them a physical exam. Common diseases and medical conditions will also be discussed.

Lesson 2:
Rabbits and Chinchillas
 These fuzzy favorites will be the topic of this lesson! How they are handled in the vet hospital as well as the way a vet does a complete physical exam will be discussed. Problems that we see them for in the vet clinic/hospital will be addressed. Bunny burrito practice (need a stuffy and a towel)

Lesson 3:
Snakes and Lizards
 These popular pets will be reviewed and the way that vets help their clients care for these reptiles will be discussed. The importance of knowing the species needs in order for them to stay happy and healthy will also be shared.

Lesson 4:
Ferrets and Hedgehogs
 Although some states in the U.S. do not allow these animals as pets, many do. These are not for every family, but those who own them enjoy them very much. The needs of these critters as well as why they are commonly see in the vet hospital are the focus of this lesson.

Parental Guidance
Some medical conditions can be upsetting to some learners. We will be looking at some photos that can be “gross” to some students.

I  have a MEd from Colorado State University and a Master of Veterinary Education (MVEd) from Lincoln Memorial University’s School of Veterinary Medicine.
