Biology Petri Dish Lab (Flex 4 Week Program: Grow Your Own Bacteria)

Interested in learning about germs? Come learn how to collect bacteria in your home, grow it, write a lab report, and identify the bacteria found.
Class experience
Collect samples around you, test them and see what bacteria will grow in an agar-filled petri dish. These samples can be from anywhere: test toilet seats, doorknobs, refrigerator doors, faucet taps and other surfaces in your home to see what yucky bacteria is lurking around invisible to the human eye. These can be found at Carolina Biological, Amazon or other science websites. Parents, we will be collecting bacteria. Students will be swabbing areas of their home to grow bacteria in sealed containers. I do ask that students throw away the containers at the end of the 4 weeks and I encourage everyone to wear gloves.
The instructor used the following: Holt Biology Textbook and Brenau Microbiology Textbook Students will not need to purchase any curriculum it will be provided by the instructor in a teacher created slideshow.
