Biology Petri Dish Bacteria Lab: Bacteria Around Us (Grades 6-12)

This Biology lab is a great supplement to your science curriculum. The class will focus on the unseen bacteria around us as students are given step-by-step directions on how to collect bacteria safely into agar petri dishes for the lab.

Class Experience

-learn about microbes that are invisible around us each day
-demonstrate how to take a sample of bacterial safely
-explain the difference in qualitative and quantitative data
-learn the steps needed to add variables to experiments
-learn how to discuss and share data in a group setting effectively 
Mrs. Collins has been teaching science for 22 years. She has a great love for science experiments and labs, and is a true believer that learning by doing helps with comprehension. 
Students will be making independent samples outside of the live session.

**In order to complete this lab, families will need to purchase pre filled agar petri dishes online. These can be found at Carolina Biological, Amazon or other science websites. notepad pencil or pen clear tape gallon ziploc bags q tips gloves hand sanitizer
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
A short fun assessment will be given at the end of the session to test comprehension over microbes and the process of collection. 
40 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
Parents and students will be provided written and verbal instructions on how to collect the bacteria safely. Students should seal the dishes after the collection, and not open them again. When the lab is over, parents are asked to seal up the petri dishes in ziploc bags before disposing of them in the trash.
