Advanced Level
This is an introductory genetics course aimed at high school students who are interested in studying biology. Students will get some background on the history of the field and will learn about basic concepts such as Genes and Cell Division, Mendelian and Non-Mendelian Inheritance, Human Pedigrees, Chromosomal Patterns of Inheritance and basic molecular genetics, such as DNA replication, Transcription and translation. If time permits we will also discuss some methods in molecular genetics. I will draw back on my own experience as a genetics researcher. Each class will be comprised of a lecture followed by exercises and review questions if time allows. I will use slides with graphics and pictures and many examples to allow students to clearly follow and remain interested. My classes are interactive and I encourage discussions and questions. The course will be structured as follows: Class 1: Introduction to genetics: what is a gene? Class 2: Cell division Mitosis Class 3: Cell division Meiosis Class 4: Mendelian genetics Class 5: Extending mendelian Genetics Class 6: Human pedigrees Class 7: Gene linkage Class 8: DNA replication and PCR Class 9: Transcription and Translation Class 10: Revision/selected topics Though there is no prerequisite for this class, students would benefit from being familiar with basic concepts of biology. I will be providing lecture notes as well as optional assignments after each class
Learning Goals
After taking this class learners will be able to:
-Describe the processes and functions of mitosis and meiosis
-Apply the principles of Mendelian inheritance.
-Analyze human pedigree charts and identify the mode of inheritance.
-Explain gene linkage and linkage maps
-Understand some basic principles of molecular genetics
