Class Experience

Beginner - Intermediate Level
In this 4 week course we will begin to explore topics in zoo animal veterinary science and zoology. Each week a we will discuss a topic related to the care of zoo animals both in a zoo and in a conservation area. Short video clips will be used in class so learners can observe the animals with a vet or zookeeper. Also there will be additional carefully selected YouTube video links that will be safely embedded in the online classroom for further learning. Optional project ideas will also be posted. This course is not graded.

Over this introductory course, we will cover:
Week 1. Careers with Zoo Animals, Why are these professions so important? * optional assignment- research the careers of either the zoo veterinarian or a zoo keeper and describe what you might enjoy about doing this job. (You don’t have to want to be either one right now… but what parts seem fun?)

Week 2. How do they know if a zoo animal is sick or injured? How does a vet get close enough to a wild animal to be able to tell? * optional assignment- select a species of animal that may live in a zoo or conservation area and research a disease or medical condition that they might get. Describe the symptoms and how a vet might know that the animal needs care.

Week 3. Physical exams and diagnostic testing - How are vets able to perform physical exams and collect samples such as blood for testing on these types of animals? Behavioral training that allows zookeepers and vets to get close enough to conduct these important tests will be discussed. * optional project - select a species of zoo animal - what type of training would be helpful to be able to get an exam or testing done?

Week 4: Surgery on zoo animals - How do vets get zoo animals under anesthesia and into surgery? How are these animals recovered after surgery? * optional project - research a type of surgery that a zoo vet might need to do on a species that you select.

This class does not require any prerequisite learning. This course content is also different from any of my other veterinary courses so please join in even if you have previously taken any classes with me!

IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER *** no veterinary advice will be given in this class. I you have questions or concerns about your own animals, please contact your veterinarian.

Learning Goals

Learners will continue to develop their knowledge of veterinary science using wild animals, both in the zoo and wild conservation areas, as the topics.
