Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 6
Intermediate Level
In this engaging biology course for 10-11-year-olds, students will explore fundamental concepts of living organisms and their environments. The course is designed to spark curiosity and build a solid foundation in biology through a mix of interactive activities and structured lessons.

Topics to be Taught:

Introduction to Cells:

Structure and function of plant and animal cells.
The role of cells in living organisms.
Human Body Systems:

Basic overview of major systems (e.g., circulatory, respiratory, digestive).
How these systems work together to maintain health.
Plants and Photosynthesis:

Parts of a plant and their functions.
The process of photosynthesis and its importance.
Ecosystems and Habitats:

Different types of ecosystems (e.g., forests, deserts).
How plants and animals adapt to their environments.
Life Cycles:

Stages of development in various organisms (excluding animal classification).
Class Structure:

Introduction (10 minutes): Overview of the day's topic with a brief discussion to set the context.
Instruction (20-25 minutes): Detailed explanation of the topic using slides and video clips to illustrate key points.
Interactive Activity (15-20 minutes): Hands-on games or experiments to reinforce learning. For instance, building models of cells or simulating ecosystems.
Discussion and Q&A (10-15 minutes): Open floor for students to ask questions and discuss what they’ve learned.
Wrap-Up (5 minutes): Recap of key points and a preview of the next class topic.
Teaching Style:

Interactive and Engaging: Use a variety of teaching methods to keep students involved. This includes storytelling, interactive games, and multimedia presentations.
Visual Learning: Employ slides, diagrams, and video clips to make abstract concepts more tangible.
Hands-On Experience: Facilitate experiments and activities that allow students to apply what they’ve learned in a practical way.
Learner Interaction:

Lectures: Short, engaging presentations to introduce and explain topics.
Games: Educational games that make learning fun and interactive.
Slides and Video Clips: Visual aids to support explanations and capture attention.
Discussion: Encourage students to share their thoughts and ask questions, promoting a deeper understanding of the material.
This structure ensures that students not only learn key concepts but also develop a genuine interest in biology through active participation and interactive learning experiences.

Other Details

Pre-Requisites
Note taking skills preferred, ability to memorize, discuss concepts and teach to peers recent topics. However, I am not very strict on this, all are welcome.
Supply List
Notebook, pencils, coloring pencils and creativity. I encourage use of note cards as well.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Sources
I will create content for students to learn as we go through the course. Occasionally I will use videos from Youtube for visual representation of topics; I will also clarify information as we watch those videos and note down important bits of information for students to write down.
