What's included

9 live meetings
7 hrs 30 mins in-class hours
Homework
1-2 hours per week. The students will have homework after each class. They will be asked recall and open-ended questions where they will have to apply what they learned to correctly answer the question. I ask that the students review what was what they learned every day. Optional: I ask that the students dedicate 20-30 minutes of study time each day.
Assessment
The students will be assessed as they engage in discussions and as they interact in a question-answer session at the end of class. The students will periodically be given quizzes and/or formative assessments. This will guide my instruction. I will review what the students need.

Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 7
[2nd of four 9-week sessions]
This course takes a modified, thematic approach to Biology. It offers content that is typically taught during the second 9-weeks in a traditional Biology course. The students will take an in-depth look at genetics and heredity. They will learn about the processes of cell division called mitosis & meiosis. The following topics will be discussed:
 - Systems of specialized cells within organisms
 - Body Systems
 - Structure and Function - Chromosomes
 - Cellular Reproduction - Mitosis
 - Sexual Reproduction & Chromosomes (Meiosis)
 - DNA Replication
 - Mutations
 - Genetic Variation

The students will learn the structure and function of chromosomes. They will learn about the location and function of genes. This section will be taught using pictures, video clips, slides, discussions, lecture, and open-ended questions. Students will learn how cells divide. They will learn about mitosis and meiosis. The students will learn the difference between somatic cells and germ cells. This section will be taught using pictures, video clips, slides, discussions, lecture, and open-ended questions. The students will learn how DNA replicates. They will also learn about the processes of transcription and translation. This section will be taught using pictures, video clips, slides, discussions, lecture, and open-ended questions. The students will learn the probability of traits as it relates to genetic and environmental factors in the expression of traits. This course will be taught using pictures, video clips, slides, discussions, lecture, and open-ended questions. The students will need to know the structure and function of the cell which is taught in the first course. The second 9-weeks course will pick up where this course leaves off.

Learning Goals

Students will improve their understanding living organisms. They will improve their understanding of the genetics and heredity. They will learn how populations grow. Engaged students will improve their ability to respond to Biology state assessment questions on cell division and genetics & heredity.
