US Grade 8 - 11
This class will explore the Biological factors which can impact Psychology and Behaviour, with a focus on the following topics: Week 1: Brain Structure, Localisation of Function, and Brain Scanning Techniques (e.g. fMRI, EEG) Week 2: The Nervous System, The "Fight or Flight" Response, and Anxiety Week 3: Neurons and Synapses Week 4: The Biological Basis of Emotions and Motivation Week 5: Genetic Inheritance and Personality Traits Week 6: The Evolutionary Basis of Aggressive and Pro-Social Behaviours Most of the class time will take a combined lecture and discussion format. Classes will also include other interactive tasks such as short quizzes, and collaboratively placing labels/stamps onto diagrams where appropriate to the content. No prior knowledge is required, but an interest in biology and/or psychology would be great! This class will also be available as a flexible-schedule class. Learners who join this class are also able to join my "Psychology and Neuroscience GROUP" for a free trial (refunded when signing up), to allow opportunities to interact with more peers and gain exposure to an even wider range of topics in Psychology. Participation: Cameras must be turned on at the beginning of class to comply with Outschool's safety policy - after this it is at the student's choice whether they wish to use their camera for the whole session. Students may choose to participate verbally or using the chat box to type responses. For quizzes, they may hold up a number of fingers to visually indicate their chosen response. I do request students to mute when not speaking (to minimise background noise) and raise hands (depending on class size).
Learning Goals
Students will learn the names and functions associated with parts of the brain and nervous system.
Students will learn how to apply their knowledge of the nervous system to topics such as stress, anxiety, and treatment of mood disorders.
Students will learn how biology can underpin the motivation for different behaviours and emotions.
Students will learn terminology around genetic inheritance, and understand how to interpret information in terms of whether or not it suggests a genetic or evolutionary component to different types of behaviour.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
This class will cover the biological perspective of psychology, describing from an academic viewpoint various ways in which biological factors can influence the behaviour of people and animals. Behavioural categories such as anxiety and aggression will be used to illustrate the effect of biology on behaviour. Students will not be expected to share any personal experiences but may do so if they feel comfortable giving an example on any topic.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
