Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 12
This Biochemistry course is an AP level course. We will examine DNA, RNA, and translation into protein. Next, we will learn about amino acid structure and peptide bonds. With that understanding we will look at protein folding and its implications in protein function. Next, we will discuss carbohydrates; followed by lipids. We will learn about enzymes and the relationship of the enzyme with substrate and inhibitors. Then, we will consider all the biomolecules as we discuss metabolism.

Please note:
1. The learners should already have a good understanding of chemical and biological principles. This class should build upon what they already know, but I can help fill in some gaps.

2. I offer live classes on DNA & RNA, Amino Acids and the Citric Acid Cycle. I have modified the class content and included it in this FLEX class which does not have live meetings.

3. I also offer this class as a live multi-day class.

Week 1: DNA, RNA, and the "Central Dogma"
Learners should watch the video lecture to understand DNA & RNA structure and the Central Dogma.
Links will be provided for additional information for clarity and to visualize structures.
Learners should make a model of DNA using paper and pencil, a modeling kit, or household items. They should take a picture and post it on the classroom page or message me privately, if they prefer.
Learners can extract DNA and submit a picture of their result.
Learners should complete an online quiz with the related material.
After everyone has completed the quiz, we can review the answers via chat on the classroom page.

Week 2: Amino Acids
Learners should watch the video lecture to understand amino acid structure, peptide bonds, and protein structure.
Links will be provided for additional information for clarity and to visualize structures.
Learners should make a model of a peptide using paper and pencil, a modeling kit, or household items. They should take a picture and post it on the classroom page or message me privately, if they prefer.
Learners can denature protein from egg whites using a variety of household products and submit their results.
Learners should complete an online quiz with the related material.
After everyone has completed the quiz, we can review the answers via chat on the classroom page.

Week 3: Carbohydrates
Learners should watch the video lecture to understand carbohydrates and follow any links added for supplemental information.
Learners should make a model of two carbohydrates of their choosing using paper and pencil, a modeling kit, or household items. They should take a picture and submit to me or on the classroom page.
Learners can do the iodine test and submit their results.
Learners should complete an online quiz with the related material.
After everyone has completed the quiz, we can review the answers via chat on the classroom page.

Week 4 Lipids
Learners should watch the video lecture to understand lipids and follow any links added for supplemental information.
Learners should make a model of a lipid of their choosing using paper and pencil, a modeling kit, or household items. They should take a picture and post it on the classroom page or message me privately, if they prefer.
Learners can do the brown paper test and submit their results.
Learners should complete an online quiz with the related material.
After everyone has completed the quiz, we can review the answers via chat on the classroom page.

Week 5 Enzymes
Learners should watch the video lecture to understand enzymes and follow any links added for supplemental information.
Learners should choose an enzyme and outline the general details, including a picture, if they wish. Then, they should post it on the classroom page or message me privately, if they prefer.
Learners can do the Catalase experiment and submit their results.
Learners should complete an online quiz with the related material.
After everyone has completed the quiz, we can review the answers via chat on the classroom page.

Week 6 Metabolism
Learners should watch the video lecture and follow any links added for supplemental information.
Learners should submit a diagram of either an anabolic or catabolic metabolic pathway of their choosing.
Learners can do the yeast test and share a picture of their results.
Learners should complete an online quiz with the related material.
After everyone has completed the quiz, we can review the answers via chat on the classroom page.

I am a scientist turned stay at home mom. While getting my Master's degree in Biochemistry, I taught General Biology lab and an Introduction to Molecular Biology Research lab to undergraduates. I have worked as a medical laboratory technician in a hospital and as a biochemist in drug discovery and early phase clinical trials within the pharmaceutical industry. I left that role to stay at home and homeschool my 2e son. Since he was a different learner, we explored all ways of learning and trying to make it fun.
I began teaching online by teaching English to kids in China. I enjoyed it, but Outschool allows me to go back to my scientific roots and share it with others. I hope to design and deliver classes that will share my knowledge from working as a scientist and get learners as interested and excited about science as I am.
